Omagh, the county town of Tyrone, lies at the foothills of the Sperrins, where the Camowen and Drumragh rivers join to form the River Strule. It is a busy commercial centre and is easily accessible from all parts of Northern Ireland.
Omagh District
The District of Omagh has an area of almost 440 square miles, making it the second largest district council area in Northern Ireland with a population of around 48,000. The town of Omagh is at the centre of the region. The rest of the District is primarily rural in character with its people living in scattered small towns and villages or in dispersed rural communities.
Regeneration
In 2003 the Town Hall and College were demolished to commence building of a new Civic Arts Centre and new College for the town.
The new Omagh Arts Centre is to be situated off the Main Street, on the site of the original Omagh Town Hall and in front of the Strule River. It will have a pedestrian bridge across the river to link up with the Further Education College on the other side.
Memorial Garden
The garden is now permanently located at Drumragh Avenue, in the grounds of Omagh's County Hall. The inscription on the plaque in the garden "To Remember and To Honour" was chosen by a group representing the bereaved families.
