Search the Stormont Cabinet papers

Libraries throughout Northern Ireland invite those interested in local history, politics or the development of government, to call in and browse through a new free online resource, Northern Ireland: A Divided Community 1921 – 1972.

This new online resource, which focuses on local content, allows you to browse through the Cabinet papers of the Stormont Administration from 1921 – 1972, offering a detailed, flexible format in which to study our complex and turbulent history.

These records have been described as the best continuous record of government activity and decision-making in the world, and show "how government actually worked".

Through this resource, you are able to access a full record of debates and transactions for the entire duration of the Stormont administration - the devolved government of Northern Ireland (1921-72).

Topics debated and reported in just one year of the Troubles (1970) include: policing, arms and explosives, social need, Prevention of Incitement to Religious Hatred, Army occupation of factories, road spiking, routing of Orange Day parades, dock strikes, law and order, riots and the roles of the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC).

With access through browse indexes of people and places, in addition to full-text searching of typed minutes, this digital archive will appeal not only to teachers and researchers in Irish and British History, but also to students of politics, peace studies and conflict resolution.
