Pupils from two Belfast schools were the guests of Starbucks at Castle Lane to mark the end of All Star Books Programme organised by the Belfast Education and Library Board and Reading Is Fundamental.
Mercy and Malvern Primary Schools attended sessions in Ardoyne and Shankill libraries between February and May to complete the programme which aims to foster an interest in books and reading in children.
“This is a tremendous programme and the BELB is delighted to have piloted it here in Belfast on behalf of RIF amongst the P7 classes of Mercy and Malvern,” said project coordinator Pat Jordan.
“As well as talking about books and authors one of the highlights of each visit to the library was that each child was able to choose a new book to keep. The children also had a go at writing themselves and produced posters to promote reading.
“The programme has enabled the children to explore their reading choices in an out-of-school environment and to demonstrate that they have a rich reading history - even at the age of 11.”
Pat also paid tribute to sponsors Starbucks whose staff provided refreshments at each of the sessions in Ardoyne and Shankill libraries.
“I would like to thank the funders Starbucks who are committed to putting something back into the communities they serve. What better way of doing this than through supporting literacy projects?”
RIF staff made the trip from London to present all the participants with certificates.
