Children from throughout the city will be ‘Going for Gold’ at Belfast Public Libraries this Autumn to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Cultural Olympiad is designed to celebrate Olympic and Paralympic values in the cultural field and will highlight diversity by using both culture and sport to create works and events that will bring people and places together.
The Belfast Education and Library Board (BELB) is inviting young people, aged 8-18, to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad through its ‘Going for Gold’ poster competition. Young people are asked to imagine what sporting event they would compete in during London 2012 and depict it on an A3 sized poster.
There are three age groups, primary school 8-11, secondary school 11-15, and 16-18 year-olds. Winners will receive gold, silver or bronze medals and selected posters will form an exhibition to be displayed in the Central Library in February 2009.
‘Going for Gold’ will be launched at Belfast Central Library on Friday 26 September at 11am.
“The Cultural Olympiad encourages audiences to take part, it involves and inspires young people, and will create a lasting legacy,” said Chief Librarian Katherine McCloskey.
“Hundreds of events will be taking place across the country and we are sure that the creative talents of the young people of Belfast will contribute to this unique marriage of sport, culture and the arts.”
Other events in Belfast Public Libraries include ‘Get a head start on Halloween with Galloper Thompson’. This is a creative storytelling session which will take place in Grove library on Friday 26th September at 3.30pm in association with the Creative Writers Network. There will also be a multi Cultural Photographic Exhibition by Gino Kelly in Shankill Library and Gino will be in Shankill on the 26th September at 11am to talk about the exhibition.
