Into the Darkest Corner - Elizabeth Haynes

If you have ever wondered how an independent, fun loving woman ends up in a violent relationship read this book. Catherine's voice is engaging from the start as she talks about her need to repeatedly check the locks on the entrance doors to her flat whilst also acknowledging the ridiculousness of her situation. The detailed descriptions of Catherine's routines build up the tension as she slowly reveals why she is so obsessed with checking the locks. The author uses two different time frames to highlight how much Catherine has changed. The Catherine in 2003 is a very different woman to the frightened one in 2007. This psychological thriller is fast paced and chilling, with a realistic twist. The impact of OCD and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on victims of abuse is sensitively handled and believable. Lock all your doors and settle down for one of the most gripping reads of the year!

His book is a wide-ranging tome that traces the...

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick De Witt

Canadian writer Patrick De Witt’s second novel marks the first time a western has made the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize. Described as being a homage to the classic western genre this darkly comic and at times unsettling novel must be ranked as one of the best I’ve read in ages.

The Sisters Brothers of...

Sacred places: sites of spiritual pilgrimage from Stonehenge to Santiago de Compostela - Philip Carr-Gomm

Serendipity is my favourite way of sourcing reading matter. I would never (make that never ever) knowingly go looking for a book on sacred sites, but there I stood, after picking the book off the shelf at random,  mesmerised by a photo of...

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson

The book cover caught my eye…..it was intriguing.  The picture of a girl’s back with a dragon tattoo.  I was already a big fan of the Swedish Crime writer Henning Mankell and this new novelist was getting lots of publicity.

Tattoo is number one in the very successful Millennium Trilogy; the Swedish...
