About Us

The Public Libraries of Northern Ireland are committed to delivering a high quality, equitable, responsive and flexible library service.

We aim to do this by providing access to all types of information, knowledge and works of creative imagination through our lending, reference and schools services.

The Electronic Libraries Programme provides a high-speed network, linking public libraries throughout Northern Ireland, giving access to online resources, e-mail and the Internet and ensuring that our services continue to develop and expand.

The online services afford opportunities for involvement with culture, education and citizenship issues and, for the first time, make available the combined book stock of each of the five library services to all library members, irrespective of where they live.

Electronic Libraries for Northern Ireland (ElfNI):  ElfNI is one of our most exciting and innovative projects, dramatically changing the way libraries are run in Northern Ireland.  This 10-year PFI, to supply all IT services to Northern Ireland's five Education and Library Boards, reached steady state in 2003, just eighteen months after the contract was signed.  Ultimately it will support one billion Internet sessions each year.
